When it comes the U.S. mobile market share, Apple (AAPL) continues its domination while Google (GOOG) Android OS continues to slip. And even though Android dominates outside the U.S., Apple holds the biggest market share in arguably the most profitable market here in the U.S. One needs to look no further than the recent holiday shopping figures to realize who (what mobile OS) rules the market here in the U.S. Apple’s iOS devices (iPhone, iPad) were the dominant mobile devices with holiday shoppers. In fact, on Cyber Monday the iPad dominated tablet shopping with over 90% of all purchases made from tablet computer coming from the iPad.
Previous (October) numbers showed Apple’s iOS on the top spot with 48.1% marketshare in the States followed by Android, falling from 63.3% to 46.7%. The most recent figures show Apple at 53.3% (up 17.5% year-on-year) while Android continues its decline to 41.9% (down 10.8% year-on-year). The continuous positive trend for the Cupertino-based company is mainly due to the launch of the latest iPhone, the iPhone 5, as well as the iPad mini and the 4th generation full-size iPad. “Apple has reached a major milestone in the US by passing the 50% share mark for the first time, with further gains expected to be made during December”, said Dominic Sunnebo, global consumer insight director at Kantar Worldpanel ComTech.
