Did iOS 6 Slow Down Your iPhone Or iPad? Here’s One Way To Fix It

** Update 10.29.12 **  I’ve been covering the iOS 6 WiFi problem from day 1 (actually from the first hour iOS 6 was released) – I don’t profess to know everything, but I’ve found (and a lot of the readers that have communicated with me have also found) that more than likely one of the fixes I’ve written about below will resolve your WiFi connectivity issue.  If not, then it’s possible your WiFi problem is outside the scope of iOS 6.

How to fix your slow iPhone after upgrading to iOS 6

*** UPDATE  9.24.12 @ 10:40pm ***  I failed to mention that along with steps below fixing your slow and freezing up iPhone or iPad, the fix also saves your iPhone & iPad battery, preserving your battery life.  This makes sense though, right?  Because if you have all of the location aware apps running continuously in the background, then your battery just won’t last very long!  So by following the steps below, not only will you fix your slow and freezing up iPhone or iPad, but you’ll also be preserving the devices battery life.

One of the first things I noticed after I upgraded my iPhone 3GS to iOS 6 was how slow it was responding, opening, loading, etc… it just seemed to be bogged down and I couldn’t understand what was happening.

So I starting to investigate a little into what’s happening behind the scenes with my iPhone.  Now granted, I have an iPhone 3GS that is slow anyway, but after upgrading to iOS 6, it seemed a heck of lot slower than it normal is.

What I found, after upgrading my iPhone 3GS to iOS 6, was the following under my location services:

So do you see the problem here?

That’s right, every one of my location apps that are “location aware” capable is enabled.  This wasn’t the case prior to upgrading to iOS 6.

So apparently, when you upgrade to iOS 6 on your iPhone (and I’m assuming also on your iPad), it will automatically enable all of your location aware apps.

Well when you do this, all of these apps are processing in the background and this is putting a huge drag on your device’s processing power.

How to speed up your iPhone / iPad after upgrading to iOS 6

Let me give you a give and easy way to fix this problem and speed up your iPhone or iPad device.

#1:  Tab on the “Settings” icon on your homescreen or homepage

#2:  Find “Privacy” and tap on that

#3:  After you tap “Privacy”, the next screen should have “Location Services” – this may be at the very top of your screen > go ahead and tap on “Location Services”

#4:  Customize your settings.  This means, go down through your list of apps that have location enabled and turn off the location feature.

By disabling all of those location aware apps that you might not even use regularly anyway, will free up some processing power on your phone.

And hopefully, by following this tip, you should be increasing the speed of your newly upgrade iPhone or iPad.

Did you see an increase in speed on your iPhone or iPad after disabling the location elements for your apps?

Hm.. I would have thought the setting simply means that the apps can use location enabled services when it’s running/needed (and not when it’s actually closed)?

I’m a little confused about this as well, I’m thinking the same way you are Michael.
In any event, I disabled Location Services for the apps that don’t need it, and left it on for the ones that do (Maps, Foursquare, Facebook, etc).
We’ll see if this helps at all.

Unless you fully close your apps, they’re always running in the background. To fully close the, press the Home button twice, open apps will be displayed in a continuous row at the bottom. Press and hold one one of them, then press the minus sign on any you want to close. This doesn’t delete them, nor does it turn of any notifications.

What a load of codswallop. If everything worked fine with iOS 5.1, and it bombed when upgraded to iOS 6, then the problem is with Apple, not my router or any other suggested nonsense. I went back to iOS5.1 and all speed and WiFi problems disappeared.
