iPhone 5 Sets ‘Sell Out’ Record on Friday At AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, & Apple.com

In an unprecedented show of force, Apple’s new iPhone 5 took only one hour to sell out this morning, shattering all previous iPhone sell out records.

People knew that the iPhone 5 was going to be a big hit, but I don’t think anyone – including Apple – expected this kind of demand.  When the iPhone 5 went on sale this morning at 3:01am EST with Verizon, AT&T, Spring, and Apple’s website, the demand was something that has never been seen before with any of the previous iPhone models.

It took less than an hour – that’s right… less than 60 minutes today, for the new iPhone 5 to completely sell out.  To put this in perspective, when the iPhone 4 launched back in June 2010, it took approximately 20 hours for that model to sell out.  The iPhone 4s took 22 hours to sell out when it was launched about 16 months later.

And now here we are, the iPhone 5 announcement only two days behind us and we’ve just experienced history with Apple’s ground breaking mobile phone.

The demand put considerable strain on all of the carriers websites, including Apple.com which went down briefly after the pre-sale was opened.  AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint all experienced problems on their servers as traffic flooded their sites to get the iPhone 5 pre ordered.  People who couldn’t get on to one of the sites to pre order resorted to going to the App store through their iPhone.  But even that, after a certain period of time, was frivolous.

So why did the iPhone 5 sell out so fast?

I have a couple of theories as to what caused the iPhone 5 to sell out fast.  One of them is pretty obvious.  People have been holding off on buying a new iPhone 4s because they knew the iPhone 5 was coming.  So this pent up demand was released this morning when the iPhone 5 was made available for pre order.

The other reason I believe it sold out so quickly was because of the number of mobile phone carriers that were available to sell the iPhone 5.  You have AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, and Apple.com all available for people to flood the web and pre order than iPhone 5.

So what do you think?  What caused the iPhone 5 to sell out so quickly?

And were you one of the lucky ones to get your pre-order for the iPhone 5?

*** UPDATE *** I’ve been told that only Apple sold out within an hour and that the carriers didn’t sell out until 10 hours later (around 1pm EST), and also Spring may still have iPhone 5’s available for pre order (from Anon).

Hi there! Do you know if they make any plugins to safeguard against hackers? I’m kinda paranoid about losing everything I’ve worked hard on. Any tips?|
