Canonical (maker of Linux Ubuntu OS) CEO Jane Silber has gone on record to say that the next frontier are tablets, TV’s, and possibly even phones. One player that’s been missing from the tablet game thus far is Linux. But that all may be changing as the new CEO is getting ready to release some Ubuntu tablets in order to compete with the likes of iPad, Android, and even Amazon. The leverage Ubuntu can have here, according to Silber, is “openness”. The walled gardens of iPad, Android, and even Amazon create a demand for a tablet OS that is truly open source for developers. And Ubuntu just might be the OS that makes it happen.
