Lot’s of people are actually getting offended at the new Samsung Galaxy S II commercial that takes obvious shots at the iPhone fan base. Samsung is shooting straight at the heart of the iPhone frenzy – the long lines of people waiting to get their hands on the latest version of the iPhone.
So why would people be getting upset over all of this? It’s simple really… Apple is such a dominant force in the smartphone space that any competitor that dares step forward is seen as offensive.
I actually have two thoughts on this issue and then you can watch the commercial and judge for yourself.
1) I don’t like it when any company stoops down to a level to where they have to actually take shots at a competitor in order to market their products. If your product is really that great, it should have the merits to stand on its own two feet. Let your product be the promotion of itself – not the cutting down of competitors.
2) Ultimately, the markets are such that they thrive on competition. So the commercial shouldn’t offend anyone – it’s simply a reflection of what competition and capitalism is all about. Regardless of Samsung’s intentions, they’ve captured the media’s attention with the commercial and thus brought a spot light on their new Samsung Galaxy S II. I’d say that ultimately Samsung has won here.
Here’s the commercial that’s at the center of it all:
